BIG RED ROBE | DA HONG PAO

BIG RED ROBE | DA HONG PAO | WUYI ROCK OOLONG

Regular price $23.00 $0.00

Big Red Robe (Da Hong Pao) is one of China's most revered oolong teas. It originates from the wild tea plants growing on the cliff of Wuyi mountains.

This Wuyi 'rock oolong' has unique long and curly leaves that are heavily roasted rather than the usual ball shaped oolong leaves. The tea has a warm roasted aroma with a rich, long-lasting floral fragrance and smooth & sweet aftertaste.

This tea is one of our 'LIMITED EDITION' teas and may not be available throughout the year.

There are loads of stories behind the origins of the tea.

According to Chinese legend, during the Ming dynasty, when the emperor's mother fell gravely ill, this tea cured her illness. As a sign of gratitude, the emperor sent big red robes to the humble tea farmer to cover the tea plants so he could preserve the tea. There are only six mother tea bushes remaining and they are considered a national treasure.

Our Da Hong Pao is made from Qi Dan variety which was propagated throughout Wuyi in the 1980's from the original mother bush of the Da Hong Pao tree.

How to prepare:

There is no set rule for brewing tea because each tea type is different.

This is a rough guide to get you started. Please experiment to find your ideal steeping time based on your personal taste.

Before preparing any type of tea always warm the teapot and teacups by rinsing it with hot water.

Put 3 g of tea in the preheated tea pot and add water at 95 C and rinse the tea before preparing the first infusion so the leaves are clean and soft for brewing.

For the first infusion, pour water at 95 C over the tea leaves and let it steep for 3-5 minutes.

When brewing in a tea pot please pour the tea out in cups until the last drop to avoid over steeping the tea left in the teapot as this will result in a unpleasant and bitter flavour.

Don’t throw out your tea leaves after your first cup of tea. The same tea leaves can be steeped up to 3-4 times. Discover the nuances of tea with every infusion.

Use the same temperature of water for the next few infusions and experiment with the steeping time 30s,1 min or even longer.
