Big Red Robe (Da Hong Pao) – A Legendary Wuyi Oolong

One of China’s most revered oolong teas, Big Red Robe (Da Hong Pao) originates from the wild tea plants growing on the majestic cliffs of the Wuyi Mountains.

This distinguished rock oolong features long, curly leaves that undergo a deep roasting process, diverging from the traditional ball-shaped oolongs. The result? A tea with a warm, toasted aroma, complemented by a rich, enduring floral fragrance and a smooth, naturally sweet finish.

As part of our LIMITED-EDITION collection, this exceptional tea may not be available year-round—savour it while it lasts!

The Legendary Origins of Da Hong Pao

Tea lore is rich with fascinating tales, and Da Hong Pao is no exception.

According to Chinese legend, during the Ming Dynasty, this extraordinary tea was said to have cured the emperor’s mother from a severe illness. In gratitude, the emperor bestowed vibrant red robes upon the humble tea farmer, draping them over the tea plants to ensure their preservation.

Today, only six original mother bushes remain, revered as national treasures.

Our Da Hong Pao is crafted from the Qi Dan variety, propagated across Wuyi in the 1980s from the historic mother bush—continuing the legacy of this legendary tea.

Tea Brewing Guide

Brewing tea is a personal experience, and there’s no strict rule—each tea type has its own unique character. Here’s a simple guide to get you started, but feel free to experiment to find your perfect steeping time based on your taste preferences.

1️⃣ Prepare Your Tea ware: Before brewing, warm your teapot and teacups by rinsing them with hot water. This helps maintain an even brewing temperature.

2️⃣ Measure & Rinse: Add 3g of tea to the preheated teapot, pour in 95°C water, and briefly rinse the leaves. This step cleans and softens the tea for a better infusion.

3️⃣ First Infusion: Pour 95°C water over the tea leaves and let them steep for 3–5 minutes to unlock the full aroma and flavour.

4️⃣ Multiple Infusions: Don’t discard your tea leaves after the first brew! The same leaves can be steeped multiple times, with each infusion revealing new depth and complexity.

5️⃣Experiment: For subsequent infusions, maintain the same 95°C water temperature and play around with the steeping time—try 30 seconds, 1 minute, or even longer to explore different flavour profiles.

Enjoy the journey of tea brewing and discover the nuances in every sip!
